In 1840 some 500,000 cubic feet of limestone were dug up from Anston quarries and carted off to London on the Chesterfield Canal, where it was used to build the houses of parliament - The Palace of Westminster. In the memorial garden next to the Leeds Arms is a pinnacle from the Houses of Parliament, possibly removed during the 1902 repair.

The memorial gardens commemorate those who died serving their country. Sadly it was padlocked on the August 2003 day I took these photos; hopefully not because of the risk of vandalism.
